Have you ever wondered what it would be like to get a true bird's eye view of Black Rock City, the Burning Man site? I’m not talking about the abstract remote views you get from an aircraft, but just hovering a few tens of metres above the ground. This has been a sort of interest of mine for some time.

So in both 2000 and 2001 I brought a pile of complicated gear in order to try and fulfill this wacky dream. First year I brought helium balloons and a radio-controlled camera rig. The second year I tried a kite with a redesigned rig.

Unfortunately, I still have yet to get the photo I really want - a picture of the Man from, as it were, his eye level. However, the whole thing has been an interesting learning experience. Here's what I've got so far.
