So for 2001 I decided to try flying a large (16 square foot Sutton Flowform) kite instead of using the rather unmanageable helium balloons. And at one level it worked. The kite hoisted the rig, if a bit grumpily, and I got some photos. Unfortunately the rig wasn’t aligned properly so most of the photos I got ended up pointing down at the ground. Very embarrassing. Well, I’m gonna get it right next year if it kills me!

For some absolutely fabulous aerial kite shots of BM this year have a look at the pictures taken by kite aerial photography (KAP) whiz Cris Benton’s site. He put his ten years or so of experience to good use and ended up with some shots that have me frankly quite jealous.

But that aside, I should thank two folks who made this year’s attempt possible. First, Mike Shannon, who generously lent me his spiffy 6-channel R/C rig after I ended up having problems with my puny 2-channel rig. And second, Jennifer Savage, who aside from being all-around wonderful flew the kite during my attempt to get photos of the Man, leaving me with both hands free to operate the camera.

Anyway. Here’s a handful of my rather disappointing photos from this year. The thumbnails link to the page on my main site - press the back button in your browser to return to this index.
