So at the end of February 2011, Shunt
had the opportunity to produce a weekend’s worth of work at the Institute
of Contemporary Arts in London. I stopped by on Friday and took a few shots.
Highlights were Kay Elizabeth performing a great set, and the incredible
Frank Chickens getting the ICA chickenized.
I remember listening to the Chickens back
in the mid 1980s, when they were the duo of Kazuko Hohki and Kazumi Taguchi. Tracks
like We Are Ninja (not Geisha), Blue Canary, and Japanese Girls were
particular standouts: brilliantly comedic yet moving commentaries on the role of women
in Japanese society, and western views of Japanese culture. So it was quite a thrill for me to see the current incarnation
of the Chickens (Kazuko Hohki and friends) perform live!
Anta mo ninja! Watashi mo ninja! Metsubushi nagete, doron doron!
